3 reasons to choose lab-grown diamond rings

June 30, 2022

A diamond lasts forever, and so does its impact on our planet. But what if we told you that a greener, more affordable and 100% genuine diamond exists? Of course, we’re talking about lab-grown diamonds, and they should be the star of your engagement ring.

According to lab-grown diamond retailer Provence, the first man-made gemstones were developed in the 1950s. Now, more and more couples are choosing this sustainable gemstone as the centerpiece of an engagement ring or other diamond jewelry. Yes, lab-created diamonds are completely authentic, with the same composition, brilliance, luster and stunning beauty as natural diamonds.

“They’re environmentally friendly, ethically sourced and competitively priced,” shares Kristin Crawford, vice president of merchandising and product development. So if you’re looking for sustainable fine jewelry, such as “jewelry with minimal environmental impact and people involved in every step of the supply chain,” then lab-made diamonds are indeed your best choice.

Have we convinced you yet? In the future, learn all about lab-created diamonds from industry leader Provence, including why you should choose a lab-created diamond ring to commemorate your engagement.

How Lab Made Diamonds Are Made
As the name implies, a lab-made diamond is made in a laboratory. Its origin is the only detail that distinguishes lab-grown diamonds from mined diamonds. “Lab-made diamonds are ‘grown’ in a lab using cutting-edge technology that replicates the growth process of natural diamonds,” explains Crawford. “The result is man-made diamonds that are chemically, physically and optically identical to diamonds grown beneath the earth’s surface. The lab-made diamonds are made of carbon and are identical to mined natural diamonds.”

Why You Should Choose Lab-Made Diamonds
Lab-made diamonds are competitively priced

Lab-made diamonds have all the sparkle and value of natural diamonds, but at a lower price. According to Provence, lab-grown diamonds can cost 20 to 30 percent less than mined diamonds. This is because the supply chain is shorter – it typically takes six to 10 weeks to create a lab-created diamond.

Lab-made diamonds are better for the environment

Lab-made diamonds have a fraction of the environmental impact of mined diamonds, and the proof is in the numbers. According to Crawford, mining one carat of diamonds disturbs nearly 100 square feet of land and produces nearly 6,000 pounds of mineral waste. In contrast, creating a 1-carat diamond in the lab would disturb only 0.07 square feet of land and produce only 1 pound of mineral waste.

A mined diamond consumes more than 126 gallons of water per carat,” Crawford added. On the other hand, a lab-created diamond consumes only 18 gallons. In addition, lab-created diamonds use less energy.”
